Congrats! Question about the decision not to include the aside about gender affirming care: did you get the sense that there was perhaps a reluctance to get into that angle because of the outlet? NYT is sort of notorious for not being great about trans stuff. It be dope to see you pitch that angle as another feature maybe at another outlet tho! It’s an important discussion.
Yes great Q and I’m glad you asked. The gender affirming care piece was one of those angles that took the article too far from the very narrow aperture we wanted to explore. I think we quite literally hit the column inch limit and had to cut a few different things that felt like doors into much larger topics we couldn’t address properly in the word count, e.g. GLP-1s and expanding more on Looksmaxxing surgeries.
You’re right though, there’s a sociopolitical lens that would be a really good framework to use and is a story big enough to merit its own piece!
However, even as a slightly chubby kid, Teddy could swing a bat like no other, which earned him the sobriquet “Downtown Brown!” whenever he stepped up to the plate.
